Rebels go 3-2 during five-match day at South Hardin

ELDORA — Gladbrook-Reinbeck put together a winning day during a busy five-match stretch Saturday at South Hardin High School, picking up three victories while playing 11 sets of volleyball.

 

The Rebels finished the day 3-2, earning victories over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Oelwein and host South Hardin. Their two losses came against Greene County and South Tama County.

Dike-New Hartford put itself in position to knock off Grundy Center on Friday night, but the Wolverines couldn't find the points they needed in the second half.

Grundy Center had the better answer.

 

The Spartans overcame an early deficit, grabbed the lead before halftime and shut out Dike-New Hartford over the final two quarters to earn a 21-13 victory Friday, Sept. 11, in Grundy Center.

 

Grundy Center improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive victory after opening the season with a loss to Aplington-Parkersburg.

 

Cougars’ second-half rally falls short at Belmond-Klemme

BELMOND — AGWSR made a strong second-half push Friday night, but the Cougars couldn't quite complete the comeback in a 28-21 loss to Belmond-Klemme.

The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter and carried a 21-6 advantage into halftime.

Spartans take down Dike-New Hartford, 21-13

Grundy Center picked up a big win Friday night, defeating Dike-New Hartford 21-13 for its second consecutive victory.

The Spartans improved to 2-1 on the season after entering the night coming off a 20-17 win over Columbus Catholic. Grundy Center has responded with back-to-back victories after opening the season with a 27-7 loss to Aplington-Parkersburg.

GLADBROOK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck had waited nearly two weeks to get back on the football field.

The Rebels certainly looked ready when they did.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck erupted for 37 points in the first quarter Thursday night and never looked back, rolling to a 72-8 victory over Colo-NESCO at Gladbrook-Reinbeck Football Field.

G-R raced to a 37-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter and added 16 more points in the second to take a commanding 53-0 lead into halftime.

Spartans overwhelm AGWSR in dominant three-set sweep

GRUNDY CENTER — There was little drama about this one.

Grundy Center took control from the opening set Tuesday night and never loosened its grip, overwhelming AGWSR in a 25-9, 25-8, 25-8 sweep at Grundy Center High School.

The Spartans didn't simply win in straight sets. They controlled virtually every phase of the match, holding AGWSR to single digits in all three sets while combining an efficient attack with relentless pressure from the service line.

DIKE — There are difficult ways to start a football game. Then there is the kind of first quarter Dike-New Hartford endured Friday night.

 

By the time the Wolverines could settle into their Sept. 4 matchup with Aplington-Parkersburg, they were already staring at a 16-point deficit.

No. 1 Spartans roll past Rebels in three-set sweep

GLADBROOK — Class 2A No. 1 Grundy Center delivered a commanding performance on the road Tuesday night, sweeping Gladbrook-Reinbeck in three sets, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-7.

The Spartans controlled the match from the opening serve and finished with advantages across the stat sheet. Grundy Center totaled 39 kills, 38 assists, 43 digs, eight service aces and 11 blocks while attacking at a .318 efficiency.

Grundy Center erased a 14-point deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, tied the game with 28 seconds remaining and defeated Columbus Catholic, 20-17, in overtime Friday night.
