Students turn old desks into decor

GRUNDY CENTER — Like anything else, classroom desks age. Eventually they age to the point where they are replaced. A group of those desks has earned new life thanks to a pair of resourceful Grundy Center High School teachers and their students.
Late last summer, as teachers were preparing to welcome students back to class, High School Principal Ann Lebo approached business teacher Andy McQuillen and art teacher Ronda Sternhagen asking if they had any interest in working together to find a use for some of the desks the school was throwing away.
“One of the big things I’m a proponent of as a business teacher is getting people out of the classroom and doing things that are applicable to the class,” McQuillen said. “This is a great example of that, where (the students) are actually going to produce something and then they have to sell it.”
