Spartans drop opener after rally from early deficit

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center’s fourth-down attempt with less than two minutes left fell short, leaving a young Spartan football team with a 28-21 loss in its season opener against Montezuma Friday.
A Spartan team playing no fewer than three freshmen and four sophomores fell behind 21-0 in the first 10 minutes, yet rallied to have a chance to tie the game by the end of the first half.
Montezuma powered past the Spartans in the early going, rolling up 150 first-quarter yards. Using a combination of tailback Mitch Stevens and fullback Ryan Maschman, the Braves finished with nearly 400 yards of total offense, 339 of which came on the ground and most of which came in the first half.
