GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy Center boys bowling started the season with a win over New Hampton at Crystal Bowl on Friday.

The Spartans won with a 2,275-pin total to the Chickasaws’ 2,185.

In the individual round, Cooper Hoy led the way with a 348 series. Jacob Hoy had the best single-game score for the Spartans at 182 and finished with a 334 series.

Going to the Baker games, Grundy started slow with a 107 but saved its best for last with a 165 in the fifth game to secure the victory.

“It’s a little different, switching lanes, I think Cooper thought they were a little wetter,” Grundy Center head coach Brandy Bingman said. “But we definitely improved as the Bakers went on and rotated kids in and out.”

The Spartans have 18 bowlers this year, up from six last year.

“I think this freshman class just had a lot of interest in bowling compared to older classes,” Bingman said. “And you can tell they’ve grown up bowling and figure, ‘Hey, I’m gonna try this.’”
