New facilities greet Grundy Center students

GRUNDY CENTER — Students at Grundy Center Junior-Senior High School were greeted by a pair of new or renovated facilities as they returned to classes Wednesday … facilities that will not only improve their learning environment, but also their safety in the event of a severe storm.
Last weekend and as teachers prepared for Monday’s open house, final touches were being placed on the school’s new tornado safe area as well as vastly renovated high school science rooms.
Craig Schwerdefeger, the owner and principal architect for Struxture Architects of Waterloo, designed the tornado safe area, which is designed to withstand winds of up to 250 miles per hour and to be able to resist a 15-pound 2 x 4 board traveling 100 miles per hour. He said this is the 14th such structure his company has designed.
