Mustang pressure halts AGWSR girls' run

FORT DODGE – AGWSR girls basketball couldn’t solve the press defense from perennial powerhouse Newell-Fonda, falling 76-39 to the Mustangs in a Class 1A Region 2 final at Fort Dodge Senior High School on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The Mustangs return to the state tournament for the 18th time and the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. AGWSR bows out after an exceptional season with a 23-2 overall record.

Nakia Ollivierre led the Cougars with 21 points. Josie Kuper added six points and 10 rebounds and Trevyn Smith scored seven points with four rebounds.

Newell-Fonda had 15 steals contributing to AGWSR’s 25 total turnovers in the game. The Mustangs led 22-6 after the first quarter and were up 45-23 at halftime.

Thursday’s game was the final go-round for seniors Brynn Smith, Avery Lafrenz and Brianna Kruger. The Cougars will have a quality core returning next season, including Ollivierre, Kuper and Trevyn Smith.
