Merle Allen Christians

Merle Allen Christians, age 77, of Davenport, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and no public services will be held at this time. Merle was born in Eldora, Iowa on November 27, 1943, the son of Chris and Jennie (Geiken) Christians. He graduated from Wellsburg High School and later received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Iowa State University in 1965. He proudly served his country with an artillery battalion in the United States Army, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. Merle served from 1967-1968 during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He married Sandra Kruse on December 18, 1971 in Davenport.

Merle was an accounting manager for Caterpillar Inc. at both Mt. Joy, Iowa and Peoria, Illinois for thirty-three years. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport. He was also a member of the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans of America. Merle enjoyed working outdoors and exercising. Above all, Merle loved his Lord, country and family, especially his grandchildren.

Merle will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandy; two children, Jamie Buckendahl of San Jose, California and Kyle (Clarice) Christians of St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Ella and Evan Buckendahl and Julian, Greta, George, Hollis and Allister Christians; and three siblings, Edward (Bonnie) Christians of Wellsburg, Iowa, Joan Mooney of Gifford, Iowa and Calvin (Sharee) Christians of Bettendorf.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Floyd Mooney.
