Friday's girls basketball: Reding beats buzzer, Spartans upend Trojans

GRUNDY CENTER -- Bailey Reding scored a three-point basket as time expired in a 56-54 overtime victory for Grundy Center against 13th-ranked (3A) West Marshall on Friday at Grundy Center High School.

Reding finished with a team-leading 21 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Paiton Wallis added 13 points and Frannie Brown grabbed a team-leading 12 rebounds to go with six points.

The Trojans, between a possession that lasted 70 seconds of the overtime period and making four free throws, put the Spartans down 54-50 with 45 seconds left in the OT. Wallis gave Grundy Center new life with a three-pointer with 16 seconds left. After a Spartan foul on a steal attempt, Avril Sinning missed both free throws for the Trojans. Frannie Brown came down with the rebound and kicked it to Wallis, who moved it up the court briefly before passing to Reding who dribbled down the edge of the court and tossed a running three-point attempt before the buzzer that rattled home for the win.

West Marshall (5-1, 3-1 NICL West) led 16-10 after the first quarter but Grundy Center (5-1, 4-0) outscored the Trojans 23-4 in the second quarter for a 33-20 halftime lead.

AGWSR ROUTS SOUTH HARDIN: The Cougar held South Hardin to two first-half points in a 40-19 blowout at South Hardin High School.

AGWSR will start 2020 tied with West Marshall at 3-1 for second place in the NICL West behind undefeated division leaders Grundy Center. The Cougars are 5-2 overall.

Alyssa Hames led the Cougars with 19 points, Rachel Sicard added nine points.

REBELS FALL IN OVERTIME: Gladbrook-Reinbeck lost a cross-NICL battle at Wapsie Valley High School, with the Warriors winning 47-44 in overtime.

The Warriors outscored the Rebels 9-6 in the overtime period.

Katie Clark led G-R with 13 points, adding nine rebounds. Saari Kuehl had six points with 10 rebounds and Emma McClintock added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.

The Rebels head into the holiday break at 1-7 overall.

COMETS HANDLE MUSTANGS: BCLUW rolled past East Marshall for a 54-21 victory in Le Grand.

Payton Pekarek and Allison Engle scored 13 points each for the Comets. Chloe Walters added seven points and 12 rebounds, Betula Messerly and Madison Ubben grabbed seven rebounds each.

BCLUW led 30-10 at halftime. The Comets are 2-2 in the NICL West and 6-3 overall.
