Wanda Lou Akers

Wanda Lou Akers, 82, of Grundy Center, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa. Memorial visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022, at Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family. Wanda was born on January 21, 1940, in Holland, Iowa to her parents Henry and Anna (Schmidt) Werkman. She was raised in Grundy County and graduated from Grundy Center High School in the class of 1958. Wanda was united in marriage to Gordon Akers on April 21, 1962. Together they made their home in Grundy Center and welcome their daughters LuJean and Robin into their family. The couple owned and operated the Grundy Home Bakery for many years. Wanda then went to work as a custodian at UNI. She worked there for 23 years retiring in 2010. Wanda was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. She served the church by administering communion, helping with church meals and numerous other church tasks. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, playing cards with friends, and baking. However, her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wanda is survived by be her daughters LuJean (Mike) Muller and Robin (Craig) Halupnick; grandchildren Jeff (Amy) Muller, Missy (Nick) Haynes, Kayla Bartels (Chris Crowl), and Zach Bartels (Jacie Bown); 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Lanette Saathoff, Arlene (Melvin) Haupt, Lois Meester, and Diane Ascher; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gordon; and sister Marge Meester.
