Anna Klaassen

Anna Mae (Meyer) Klaassen, 86, of Des Moines, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2022 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center while under the care of the Center and Suncrest Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 8, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, 18935 K Avenue, Holland, Iowa.

 

Anna Mae was born June 11, 1936, in Grundy Center, Iowa. She was the daughter of Marcus and Minnie (Kruse) Meyer. She grew up on a farm west of Grundy Center and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1954. Anna Mae was a lifelong member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the choir and several committees. Following high school she started working at Spokesman Press and worked there for over forty years.  

 

Anna Mae was united in marriage to Eldon Klaassen on December 26, 1956, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Holland and Grundy Center throughout their 58-year marriage. She later moved to Des Moines to be closer to her children.

 

Anna Mae most enjoyed fellowship with family and friends. She was a proud & supportive mother to her four children. She was a great cook & loved to bake! Homemade cinnamon rolls, a pan of bars and, of course, scotcheroos were always some of the favorites! She enjoyed shopping with her daughters, playing cards, and traveling.

 

Anna Mae is survived by her daughters Lori (Sandy) McCrea of DeKalb, MO, and Joni Klaassen of Des Moines; step granddaughter Ashley (Brendan) Sullivan and children Owen, Rory, Shane, Georgia & Marguerite; step granddaughter Megan Leigh; sister Wava Hemmen; and several nieces and nephews. 

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Eldon, daughter Cindy, son Lance, sisters Marcella Doak, Iva Dell Getting & Doris Kuhlman, brother Merle Meyer, brothers-in-law Lyle Doak, Virgil Getting, William Kuhlman & Jake Hemmen, sister-in-law Agnes Meyer and nephew Jimmy Getting. 

 

Memorials may be directed to the family, which will be shared with Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center and Suncrest Hospice.

 

The family thanks the staff at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines for the outstanding and compassionate care they provided their mom for four years.
