Two-sport state qualifier is Grundy Center first

GRUNDY CENTER — Jill Itzen had a bounce in her step as she came off the Ames Country Club golf course at the Class 1A state golf meet last week. And why not? She had just provided a career-best round that ended up helping Grundy Center win its state record 14th state championship. And that came just over a week after she had thrown the discus at the state track and field meet.
“Going into the district meet (in track) I didn’t really think I was going to make it to state so my mindset was really just to throw the best that I could,” Itzen said prior to the state golf meet. “My goal was just to end the year on a good note and then move on with golf because I knew we had a good chance of making it to state.”
Itzen threw a season-best in the district track meet and then had to wait more than a day to learn she had qualified for the state meet for the first time.
