GRUNDY COUNTY – The violent storm that swept through parts of Grundy County in the early morning hours of Sunday did damage throughout the Wellsburg area, and also in Grundy Center.
Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning said that there were reports of about a dozen trees down around Wellsburg, many taking power lines with them. Some residents of Wellsburg were without power from about 4 a.m. to noon, Penning said.
Strong winds and heavy rain, mixed with lightning, made for a powerful storm capable of downing and splitting trees, and in some cases completely uprooting them.
In the city of Wellsburg, a fallen tree temporarily blocked part of 2nd Street. Another fallen tree blocked the T19, just a half mile from town, until the county crew could get out to remove it.
The storm didn’t impact Grundy Center quite as heavily, though there were reports of trees down near the post office, the cemetery on the west side of town, and a block south of the Sheriff’s Office.
So far, Penning said there have been no reports of injury, and no reports of major damage to homes.
