GCHS vocal students make Spartan history

GRUNDY CENTER – At the 2016 State Solo and Ensemble Contest, Grundy Center vocal students wowed judges, and shattered school records, earning 11 “I” Superior ratings from 12 performances, along with two perfect scores.
“In the last twenty years, there has only been one perfect score,” said vocal instructor Emily Boquet, adding that two perfect scores in one day is unheard of. “It's just really rare to get a perfect score in vocal music.”
Even “I” Superior ratings are not very common, she said, noting that a “II” was the most common score, which is a step below a “I” rating and a step above a “III” rating; racking up that many “I” ratings is something that never happens, Boquet said.
She also noted that the vocal kids received many compliments from the judges; expressions of awe of the sound they had achieved, and even comparisons to college-level work.
“Every time they went into the room it was the best they had ever done, it was just a really magical day,” she said.
