A fire on CRP ground just south of Grundy Center spiraled out of control on Tuesday afternoon, and firefighters from a pair of local departments spent at least an hour and a half containing it.

The fire broke out just south of the fairgrounds on land owned by Barbara Hupman of Millersport, Ohio, near the residence of Steve and Connie Faust along N Avenue.

“Once it reached the peak of the hill, it picked up some wind and took off,” Grundy Center Fire Chief Nathan Kappel said. “We pretty much kept it to that field, because it was headed toward another residence. It was good that Holland (fire department) got there, and we got it stopped.”

According to Kappel, there were no real damages other than burnt grass, and the fire was the first major one for the department this spring. At least four firefighters were on the scene within minutes of receiving the call, and Holland firefighters joined the effort about a half hour later.

“We’re trying to get the rust broke off,” Kappel said.
