Delfs joins Register staff as spring intern

Aspiring writer and Grundy Center High School senior Zachary Delfs is joining the staff of The Grundy Register as a spring intern to learn more about reporting and hone his skills before he heads off to UNI in the fall.

Delfs was born in Georgia but moved back to Wellsburg shortly thereafter and has lived in Grundy Center since 2012, attending Grundy Center schools from kindergarten on. When he isn’t busy with school, he works at Brothers Market and creates films with the Barking Vans collective that was profiled in The Grundy Register in December.

In addition, he hosts a YouTube interview series called “Zach Attacks” and has a passion for video games, which led him to a blogging contract with PC Gamer magazine that starts in October. Delfs has always found himself drawn to writing.

“I hate reading, but I love to write. Pretty much my entire life, I’ve just been writing random stories or little fictional pieces,” he said.

At the Register, Delfs plans to focus on issues affecting high school students, shifts in education toward a more tech-centric classroom and artsy and creative people in the community.

As a gamer, he found his authorial voice in a rather unconventional manner: by doing the exact opposite of what the instructions told him, examining the motives of his characters as they took on new tasks and the impacts of their actions, and scribbling down full-length captain’s logs in role playing games.
